Bishop Conry 'misses' golden opportunity

Bishop Kieran Conry of Arundel and Brighton Diocese has 'missed' a critical chance to speak out against proposed legislation by the Coalition Government on same-sex "marriage".

In his rather yawn inducing pastoral letter issued on the great feast of The Holy Family, he speaks about the "family" structure in excellent sociological terms and there's even a passing reference to God and the Gospel of the day but......and it's an important but, there is not a mention of the fact that Holy Matrimony is a Sacrament intended to sanctify the union of one man and one woman and that any deviation from that would be in direct opposition to Church teaching and to the Holy Father's guidance on the matter.

How could one of our Bishops overlook the issue of gay "marriage"?

Was it an oversight?

Or was it just another Bishop flying the colours of weak liberalism?

Answers on a postard please.

  1. Thank you for this post and the link to Bishop Conry's Pastoral letter.
A gentle missive, but hardly a call to the battlements in the war against same-sex marriage!
Sorry Bishop Conry, but the message has to be loud and clear - in God's name, 'no' to same-sex marriage.

  2. Weak, wet, wishy-washy liberalism.

Thank God we now have a few real shepherds.

  3. It's a curiously rambling letter and reads as if paragraphs were thrown in the air to land where they may. My instinct is that this is a committee job - mostly compiled by active laywomen.
btw still ploughing on with the Memorare.

  4. I'm right out of postcards but, for what it's worth, we lived in A & B for nearly ten years and we couldn't wait to leave - and that in spite of some excellent priests whom I still miss. My normally low blood pressure rose to unprecedented heights when having to sit through previous pastoral letters, usually in the vein of the latest one.

Thank God for the appointment of the Bishops of Shrewsbury and Portsmouth - ad multos annos!

And thank you, umblepie, for a charitable but firm post. Sometimes gentleness is just not enough.

  5. "Yawn", describes most of his Pastoral Letters, my parish priest (not the most conservative), simply does not play them, in A&B they come on CD.

April 2007 he told us in one of his Pastorals to go and see Brokeback Mountain, to see what a loving relationship was about! So maybe he is saying something about his position on gay relationships and marriage, merely by his silence.

  6. It must be sinful to knowingly ordain cowardly people as Bishops.

  7. Thank you all for your comments. I think Brokeback Mountain is a bridge too far. Unbelievable.
