ReplyDeleteA lot of the Spanish and Portugese ones,in Rio, in a genuinely S./latin American (well I dunno if it reaches mexico)recentish tradition were aesthetically far far less to my taste: the more you sing , sound and look like a mixture of frank sinatra and izzy bon at their syropiest,the more people like it , for any liturgical celebration.Not quite my spirituality.
However, it must be said that , as in European Spain's 20th century hymns, (Portugal has I believe liturgical Fados surviving which must be like going over the top in WWI), the lyrics aka WORDS have, as a general rule, much more "bite" and orthodox catholic tradition and doctrine to them than modern Catholic hymns in English, which perhaps is not saying much, but it's something.
I felt, hmm, not exactly reconciled , but marvelling at God's work, watching live, when in one of the personal testimonies before-cum-starting? benediction in Copacabana, a young woman brought up completely outside the church in humble circumstances , had , aged 12, with her mother's health gone west and suffering fits and convulsions, put on the "wrong" radio station and been started into a life of prayer and practicing catholicism and christian living, details given, from the words of of of these hymns that was being broadcast.

I remain convinced that catholic youngsters would/will pilgim to WYD just as much if/when we ever have a Ukranian Pope and ALL the liturgy is in old Slavonic and sung like they do, full stop.
Telecast this might tax the viewer in a different way, but I hope to live to see it.
