Father Timothy Gallagher OMV - worth watching!

I don't often watch EWTN these days. Apart from Raymond Arroyo most of the other presenters in their chunky tweed jackets and beards (the men, I mean) all look and sound very...umm.....Episcopalian? Not sure, but they certainly don't sound very Catholic and as for the Daily Masses...pass the smelling salts please!

But today I flipped away from the dire lunchtime news to EWTN and was immediately riveted to the spot by a priest called Fr Timothy Gallagher OMV which stands for Oblates of the Virgin Mary (well, I didn't know).

He has a soft voice, a straightforward style of  address and a clear and lucid approach to things theological. He did not speak in modernist slang, he just spoke with real intensity about the faith.

He has a website HERE and he has a small but growing range of books and DVDs. He is probably very well known in the States but, I suspect, less so here in what we used to call Great Britain.

A man to watch, in more ways than one.

  1. Richard, if you were a "regular" at the Novus Ordo, you would probably appreciate EWTN's Mass. As the Ordinary Form goes, I think the hymn selection, the altar arrangement, etc is not bad at all. Is it the TLM? No, but I still think it's a few notches above what goes on in a lot of parishes in the US.

This week, I am being subjected to a priest who audibly breaks the Host during the consecration. It's all I can do not to cringe.

  2. Joyce - the priests are reverent it's just that they intone in an awful dirge - a real reverse of what the Mass should be.
I have given your last comment some thought and believe that, in the modern church, they tend to use hosts that are not pure white ie they are coarser than the traditional host. Could that be to blame?
    God bless.

  3. I find I could hear the fractioning if the altar was "miked"

Miking the altar was all the rage when I was a kid, I don't see it as much now.
