Why do we allow fanatics to abuse our services of respect?

Todays memorial service at the US Embassy, in London's Grosvenor Square, was marred by loud music attempting to drown out proceedings together with a 100 strong mob of Muslim fanatics brandishing banners claiming 'Islam will dominate the world'.

It certainly is dominating British political opinion!
OK - a minority of nutters trying to disturb the peace, we should not get too worked up over this...but I am worked up and I do believe that it is right to do so. Where British men and women, together with their overseas allies, gather in a service of some reverence (even if somewhat secular in character) they should be allowed to pay their respects unhindered. The first offical mourner at the ceremony was a 16 year old girl who stepped up to the microphone to say that she was there to honour her 'Darling Mummy' who died in the Twin Towers tragedy. That child should not have had to listen to or witness the scuffles that were taking place 100 yards away.

What is David Cameron thinking of? He is the Prime Minister - couldn't he have directed the police to remove them for causing a potential breach of the peace?
Boris Johnson was also there doing nothing to direct the police, his police force.

Among the 3,000 9/11 victims were some 67 British citizens and it is tragic that we cannot remember all of those who died that day without suffering gross disresepect from splinter groups (the EDL were also trying their best to disrupt things).

Would such behaviour be allowed on Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph? Not at present but...it may not be too far off before we experience it.

I think that the English, or British, have become punch-drunk' and are beyond any feelings of outrage.

When General Haynau "the hyena" and flogger of women was in Southwark he was attacked and beaten by admirable draymen. As Chesterton wrote:

"When an Austrian general who had flogged women in the conquered provinces appeared in the London streets, some common draymen off a cart behaved with the direct quixotry of Sir Lancelot or Sir Galahad. He had beaten women and they beat him. They regarded themselves simply as avengers of ladies in distress, breaking the bloody whip of a German bully."

God rest their souls, gentlemen to the core. But how we have changed.

  2. The question is why there was no cordon sanitaire of at least half-a-mile around the event. Anyone with a semblance of a brain could have predicted that the memorial service, following the burning of the Remembrance poppy last year, was likely to attract this kind of disruption.

These people grow ever bolder. They see tolerance as weakness, which it is what it's become. Apparently, what is as plain as a pikestaff to the rest of us is not to the politicians or the top echelons of the police.

Why was there no order to put out the flames of the burning American flag? Why were the amplifying devices not confiscated?

Instead, lines of police were made to stand idly by watching the gross insult to our dead and to the dead of our greatest ally and were then detailed to "escort" (ie protect) the protesters to the Regents Park mosque.

There are any number of laws which could have been applied to stop this display which has shamed England. These demonstrations are not an exercise in free speech but in sedition.

I hope that both the American ambassador and Prince Charles have protested in the strongest terms and have demanded answers.

All kudos to those Muslims who made journeys across country to counter this nauseous demonstration.
