We were a rough old lot before Vatican II

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing; it can clog the memory cells, distorting the truth and making recollections rose tinted and false even.

So, please, keep this in mind when you watch this old, blurry clip.

Church life is just so-oo much more spiritual and reverent today and what took place 50 plus years ago is nothing more than a deceptive memory.

Or is it?

  1. Richard,
Fortunately, the above is no deceptive memory in my book-aye I remember those grand days well; bring them back in full measure I say-the sooner the better!

    Cheers,

    Michael.

  2. That video looks post Vat II to me though.......The ladies for the most part, are wearing hats not mantillas.

  3. As a young convert in 1966 I found the Latin and the elegance of the Mass yanked away even as I was beginning to love the ancient usages. Almost 2,000 years of beauty were sacrificed for guitars, felt banners, and me-me-me-ness.

I pray for a return to the Tridentine Mass, not as an antique or a curiosity, but as the transcendent Reality it is.

  4. Very nostalgic, a general rather than particular nostalgia. I imagine the film was shot in Italy, and the singer and music seemed very Italian. I liked the tenor's voice, light but powerful and melodic. Do you know his identity?

  5. The tenor is listed on YouTube as Andrea Bocelli.
Incidentally, not many women wore mantillas for the pre-Vatican II Mass, as I remember. It was hats for special occasions/feasts, (Sunday Best for Easter, Christmas, etc.), but more often headscarves on a normal Sunday.
My impression - from the hats and the handbags, no mini skirts - is that this clip is from the early 1960s, before the new liturgy superseded the old.
    I used to love processions.

  6. Took me right back to those glorious first Sunday in May processions.Dad walking with the men of the parish big sister with the children of Mary and me with three other young fellows carrying Our Ladys statue.Mum had to stay behind to look after Grandma but they were both there in spirit. It was a great way to publicly express our faith and the whole town turned out to watch. Yet another casualty of the so called spirit of Vatican 2.

  7. Ros, it actually states that it is the 1960s but, I think that Genty covers what I would have said (thanks Genty).

Michael, God bless you and your great blog.

Brian - Genty has identified the great Andrea Bocelli as the tenor.

Mack, it is coming, seems a bit slow at times but, it's on its way.

Introibo - May processions followed by Corpus Christi - a great opportunity to show reverence for the Almighty and one's faith to the world.
