    It's a drastic distinction between the two masses, right?

Chellie, the point is that many OF Masses (not all) allow silly abuses to creep in, clown priests, balloons, writing your sins on a piece of paper and then burning them etc. Those are the excessive abuses, we also have priests ad libbing, members of the congregation undertaking duties strictly reserved for the priest. At the EF Mass you have none of those.

  4. I always get a kick out of people who say that Clown Masses and such things are rare as if those are the only way that abuses manifest themselves.

    The Novus Ordo was founded and conceived in abuses. Everything from saying Mass Versus Populum, to glass chalices and the dialog Mass. All of these things were abuses committed in the name of making the Mass more relevant and enabling participation.
