Bigotry and hatred on the streets of London

Just four years ago we in Britain were blessed with a visit from Pope Benedict that sparked off a storm of protest led, most noticeably, by a group called 'Protest the Pope.'

This, in turn led to Deacon Nick Donnelly starting his blog called 'Protect the Pope' - now, sadly, closed down by his Bishop.

But, it is interesting, looking back, to witness the bigotry and venom expressed by the usual gang of suspects, Dawkins, Tatchell and others.

It is, indeed, quite frightening to see the mob in full flow; but, even more frightening to think that it is not just the Pope that their bile is aimed at.

It is aimed at Jesus Christ and his Church.

And, of course, it is also aimed at us.

Get used to it, this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's getting worse by the minute.

  2. Was it really four years ago? I have so many treasured memories of that visit and also remember some of those demonstrators who were standing behind me opposite Westminster Abbey.

    How sad to see that a priest took part in this demonstration against the visit of Pope Benedict.

  4. 'Protest' used as a transitive verb means 'proclaim', as in 'he protested his innocence'. These people were protesting AGAINST the Pope. This solecism was no doubt one of the reasons why Stephen Fry dissociated himself from the group. I expect the famous know-all was also a bit miffed when he was taken to task by an historian for not knowing the difference between the Vatican City State and the Holy See.

    Another irony was that Peter Tatchell, who campaigned for the age of homosexual consent to be lowered to 13, castigated homosexual priests who abused adolescent boys and young men and at the same time accused Benedict XVI of 'homophobia' when he put measures in place to prevent it happening.

  5. Crucify Him! Crucify Him! They cried;
    He replied;
    "Father, Forgive them, they know not what they do."
