The end is nigh

The end of Lent is within sight and, taking stock of my penances and mortifications I find that I have not progressed much further than the 'soft' options.

The ones lambasted by Fr J in his first Lenten sermon.

I cannot quote him word for word but the essence was that giving up chocolate and strong drink is not exactly penitential.

Yet that was what I did; I refrained from eating chocolate and imbibing beer and alcohol of all kinds. I also resolved (successfully) to ramp up my daily prayer routine and I fasted a bit.

That, basically, was it.

In my defence I plead a weak will and a lifestyle that should, by rights be sedentary and serene but, in actuality, is a manic mix of work, family and desperate DIYing on a property that, at times, seems to be falling down about our ears (why ears for goodness sake?).

That is probably the same for most of us but, nevertheless, Sunday will bring a special glow over and above the glory of the Resurrection.

Priority will have to go to a pint or two (but no more than that) of the Reverend James. A draught bitter that is, according to the Scribe of Jarrow, too sweet for manly Northerners but it suits my adolescent, softie, Southern palate.

But that can only come after we drive our grindingly boring 70 plus miles to Mass.
With a 3pm Mass the day is basically gone, you cannot do much beforehand and very little afterwards, except, perhaps, drink a glass or two of the amber liquid.

Are you sitting comfortably?.....

.......a glass of Tesco whisky in your hand, your Nationwide bank statement in the other and, afterwards, a stroll down the street to your local Starbucks for a cup of disgusting coffee!

Pink beer will make you feel................ill?

But....did you know that all of those companies gave a massive wadge of money to support homosexual shenanigans?

Yes, they did.

Well, it's a free world, or so we are continually told.

And the LGBT organisation would go along with that (and that's not the London, Guildford and Brighton Tram Company) - it stands for something quite different, literally.

So now we can enjoy the fruits of the free world and drink Morrison's whisky, bank at Lloyd's and buy coffee at an independent cafe (Casa Maria's in Pembrokeshire actually makes the best coffee in the world, sorry Mystic Monks, I've yet to try yours).

I like free world choice! I just hope that Brains Brewery doesn't go pink on me!

Rev James to join the Ordinariate?

It's a cause for celebration, in fact, the whole nation (so I've noticed) is joining in this weekend and festooning the streets with bunting and flags to rejoice.

For why?

Because, my good friend Gareth Hurley, who lives in the part of Wales otherwise known as Yuppieland, has revealed that the full bodied Church of Wales vicar, one Reverend James, is to join the Ordinariate. Huzzah! and Hooray!

I would not like to steal Catholic and Welsh's thunder so please visit his blog HERE

It's official! the Holy Father approves!

Yes, Pope Benedict drinks Reverend James bitter! The above picture shows him when he was Cardinal Ratzinger (but a mole in the Vatican informs me that a draycart (beer delivery truck) makes a weekly call to the Vatican and drops off a keg of the ambrosial brew). So, now the Pope drinks Rev James bitter!

Now I can honestly* claim that the Holy Father and I share the same taste in good ale** -  Amazing.
