Ten things the Devil doesn't want us to believe

Picture: Shameless Popery

It's easy to think of the things that Satan wishes us to believe about the state of Holy Mother Church (see HERE).

But, we often forget (and he does not remind us) of the things he wants us to airbrush out of our memories.

Spiritual amnesia is one of his most potent weapons and we need to guard against it.

Here are ten of the things that, I believe, he wants us to disregard and discard.....

1. That Our Lady is the Mother of Christ and has her heel on the head of the serpent.

2. The Ten Commandments - how often do you hear those quoted today?

3. The chastity of St Joseph, foster father to the Christ child

4. That our priests are 'Other Christs', born to a lifetime of sacrifice

5. We are still the one, true Church - and always will be

6. Fatima demands our attention and our prayers and penances

7. At Mass, bread and wine are changed into the actual Body and Blood of Christ

8. That the doctrines of HMC are set in stone and cannot be replaced by a false conscience

9. Sanctity of life

10. Power of the Rosary

Ten things the devil wants us to believe

  1. We have plenty of time
  2. Satan does not exist
  3. All faiths are equal
  4. Sin is old fashioned
  5. Charity involves accepting perversion
  6. Free will is the ultimate deciding factor
  7. Life is for now, not after we are dead
  8. Tarot cards, Ouija boards and astrology are good fun
  9. A child in its mother’s womb is not a ‘life’
  10. The Pope is not infallible
Any advance on 10?

"Blogging should be made a serious criminal offence" states priest

Yep, this is true, or at least the statement is true. All will be revealed next Friday 30th September in a post I am working on regarding exorcists - until then, please keep me in your prayers...who knows what one may find when you begin looking under stones?

And on a lighter, more positive note.....

It was reported in Saturday's Daily Telegraph that London's Hyde Park is to introduce a series of 'natural' features to enable children (not kids, please note) to understand and learn about the wonders of nature.

'Glory be to God for dappled things..'
The features will include that modern version of the village pond now known as a 'dipping pond' and, get this, children will be able to slosh around collecting water boatmen, caddis larvae and all manner of aquatic creepy crawlies - marvellous.
If you want to learn about Almighty God and you are six years old then a dipping pond is a brilliant place to begin.

Please God the Health and Safety fascists and the Nanny Society will not get to hear about this.

"THE DEVIL IS ABROAD"

Fr Z has posted a chilling four word message on his blog...."The Devil is abroad."

We know, of course, that the devil is always abroad but I think that Fr Z means that he is abroad in an extraordinary way right now. Priests and Bishops are under attack, the Holy Father is under attack and the Church is being persecuted in a good old fashioned medieval style throughout the world. But it is our clergy who are so very vulnerable. If you wish to destroy a priest, it's easy. Just one allegation and phut! that's the end of a priestly vocation and the chance of a fat wad of cash for the accuser. There have been many genuine cases of priestly abuse but, I am sure, that equally, many have been false, trumped up charges. It is hard to distinguish between the lie and the truth. Sadly, it is often our best and most prominent priests who face the challenge of an unjust accusation and it must be a constant, nagging fear for them.

Avoiding situations where one might be alone with a female parishioner or a minor, walking into deliberate traps set by the perverse, reported to the Bishop for carrying out their duties diligently. The priest's lot is not a happy one right now. They need our prayers more than ever, offer a Rosary or even a decade to the cause. Pray daily to Our Lady that she will place her foot on the neck of Satan and break him in his attempt to ruin the lives of our priests. The prayer below is actually meant for priests to say in order to secure their own protection from the devil but, I am sure, it will be equally effective if said on behalf of a priest. Say it whenever possible, expecially for our blogging Fathers!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost

Most glorious Prince of the heavenly
Armies, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend
us in “our battle against principalities and
powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness,
against the spirits of wickedness in the high
places” (Ephes., VI, l2). Come to the assistance of
men who God has created to His likeness and
whom He has redeemed at a great price from the
tyranny of the devil. Holy Church venerates thee
as her guardian and protector; to thee, the Lord has
entrusted the souls of the redeemed to be led into
heaven. Pray therefore the God of Peace to crush
Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain
men captive and do injury to the Church. Offer our
prayers to the Most High that without cry come
 unto Thee.
V. May the Lord be with thee.

God of Heaven, God of Earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of Virgins, God Who has power to give life after death and rest after work, because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of whose Reign there shall be no end. We humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy Glorious Majesty and we beseech Thee to deliver us by Thy Power from all the tyranny of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies and their furious wickedness; deign, O' Lord, to grant us Thy powerful protection and to keep us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen.

From the snares of the devil,
All: Deliver us O Lord.

Grant that Thy Church may serve Thee in secure liberty
All: We beseech Thee, hear us.

Deign to crush down the enemies of the Holy Church,
All: We beseech Thee, hear us.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us
AMEN

We are never far from the demonic!

Much as in the same way it is said that in big cities one is never more than 12 feet from a rat, so it is with the demonic. The devil and his demons go rampaging throughout the world looking for souls to master and destroy and the evil one is never more than a few feet from us..

"Even priests can be affected
by the demonic"

Archbishop Fulton Sheen (whose cause for beatification is being forwarded in Rome right now) made a telling statement in one of his retreats for priests series. He said that, out of an audience of 50 or 60 priests, there would always be one or two who were tinged with the demonic.
"Mention the sacrifice of Calvary as re-enacted in the Mass and they would begin to shift uncomfortably in their seats.
By the end of the day they would be gone!"

He would go on to state that this contact with evil surrounds us in our daily lives.

I do not mean (and the Archbishop did not mean) that such people were actually possessed of a demon (although that may have been the case in some instances), it was more a situation where some element of the demonic had been allowed to enter their minds. The avenues for such a possibility are, of course, endless and they perhaps pervade the life of the Church today more than at any other time in its history.
Pornography, paedophila, marriage breakdown, drug abuse, homosexuality, perversions of every form, disbelief in the the Sacred Species, "liberated" nuns, women priests, apostasy and just plain everyday secular wrongdoings.

All have an essence of the demonic but, normally, due to our practice of regular Mass attendance and reception of the Sacraments and the subsequent graces we receive, we are able to automatically fend off most, if not all that Satan sends our way. We should not forget, either, the power of our Guardian Angel who must be fully occupied in overseeing our spiritual welfare.

The author, Patrick Leigh Fermor in his book "A time to keep silence" records that, in monasteries, the holy men enclosed are subject to bombardments by Satan. He describes one monk stating that the skies over the monastery at night are dark with demons. This is a very real and powerful threat and it is only their strong mindset and inherent spirituality that keeps them safe.

But open minds are empty vessels awaiting the devil's potions. When we used to attend Mass at the Mill Hill Fathers rural base, Courtfield, on the Herefordshire/Monmouthshire borders, the great Father Hughes often used to include accounts of his travails in Africa in his sermons. He spent many years in the wilds, like most Mill Hill Fathers and Brothers, and most of the time he would be the only priest for many miles around. I remember his account of receiving a late night call to attend a dying woman some 30 miles distant.
Packing up his case containing the Blessed Sacrament and the sacred oil and all other materials necessary for the administration of the Sacrament of Extreme Unction (it was called that 50 years ago) he mounted his motor bike and set off for the distant village.
Arriving finally he was shown to a hut where the sick woman lay. He entered holding aloft his Tilley lantern only to see the woman lying on  a settle against the far wall. He had not fully entered the room before she turned to glare at him ferociously whilst her whole body levitated upwards for about 3 to 4 feet and she screamed: "I do not want you or He whom you bring with you."
Now, according to Fr Hughes, it was at this point that he turned on his heels and fled; returning to the Mission a damn sight faster than he came.
I am sure that he did flee for his life. A priest untrained in exorcism and unprepared physically and spiritually would be very hard put to counter a full on demonic attack. The great danger being, of course, that the demon might overpower him and take control.

But possession is not rare in underdeveloped countries where people have, for many years, been under the influence of pagan beliefs and ceremonies. And it is becoming increasingly common in the developed world where poor education (I mean poor Catholic education) and a lack of intellectual rigour are becoming increasingly prevalent. That is not just a malfunction of the social framework, it is, undoubtedly, Satan weaving the web of despair, dissolution and dissipation that affects so many young people today.

He has an easy target (although, since 2005 and the advent of Pope Benedict, we have begun to re-consolidate and even started regaining lost ground) but we now have two or three generations of 'latch key' children who are now parents and grandparents in their own right. And the seeds of indifference and neglect have long since grown to fruition even to the stage of being beyond recovery.
Economic statistics used to indicate (and probably still do) that, when a person has been unemployed for more than  18 months, the likelihood of them returning to the workplace was negligible. The habit of being idle and taking state handouts had become too ingrained.

So it is with the spiritual life. Do nothing, take the handouts of violent video games, cheap cider, drugs, street crime, pornography and abortion as a means of birth control and you have a potent mix that provides easy pickings for you know who!

What can be done? How can one rewind the clock and get matters onto a footing where at least the young, the down and outs and homeless  are given a chance. We don't have the vocation numbers yet to launch a crusade, I'm not sure that, in episcopal circles, there is even a will to do so. But, we should not be prepared to roll over and accept what Satan throws at the world.

The best of weapons -
recourse to Our Lady
We must keep in mind the weapons that are at our disposal; heading the list, of course, is Our Blessed Mother, she whose heel is firmly planted on the head of the serpent. The Rosary is all powerful in this regard and is positively hated by Satan. Next comes recourse to the saints, especially those with accredited powers to overcome the devil and all his works and pomps (St Anthony, St Michael, (Padre) St Pio and St Paul of the Cross spring to mind, I am sure there are more).

Next come the outward signs of our faith that so many families neglect today. The blessing of one's house by a priest, the Epiphany chalk, a crucifix in the home, holy candles at hand, a holy water font at the side of the front door, a palm cross, statues of the saints and mementoes of the holy life - forget the strings of garlic......these things are the real McCoy and your doorstep need never be fearful of a visit by the dark angel.
And your children and friends will become encouraged to do the same; visitors to your house will benefit from exposure to the sacred rather than the profane.

Prayer to Defeat the Work of Satan

O Divine Eternal Father, in union with Your Divine Son and the Holy Spirit, and through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg You to destroy the power of Your greatest enemy – the evil spirits.
Cast them into the deepest recesses of hell and chain them there forever! Take possession of Your Kingdom which You have created and which is rightfully Yours.
Heavenly Father, give us the reign of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
I repeat this prayer out of pure love for You with every beat of my heart and with every breath I take. Amen.
Even if you can only do one thing, make it the placement of a blessed crucifix in a prominent position in your home and ask your family and friends to do the same. It may not get rid of the rats but it will certainly get rid of Satan.

I'm sorry Lord but the Bishops are revolting.....

How sad and angry Almighty God must be feeling when he considers the antics of his Bishops on earth. First we have a general laissez faire attitude when it comes to all things Papal, then we have the "Mini-Pope" syndrome "this is my Diocese and I'll do as I damned well please" (you may well be correct there my Lord), then the German Bishops who are demanding Frau Priests and marriage and now there's a lack of belief in Satan (as outlined by Fr Gary Thomas who has worked with Fr Gabriel Amorth, has been involved as an advisor in the new film, The Rite and is an experienced exorcist).
I am indebted to This Burning Fire for breaking the story and linking to a feature on Fr Thomas.

A child's view of demons, courtesy of Fr Gerald Scriven WF
According to Fr Thomas, less than 25% of the US Bishops have responded to the call made c. 2 years ago by the Holy Father for them to appoint exorcists. I am sure the same is true in Great Britain. This is bad. The explosive growth of internet opportunities to be led astray, the drugs issue, the increase of the occult in daily lives, pornography, abortion, euthanasia and the rest, means that Satan is at work more than ever today.

Here is an extract from  the interview given by Fr Thomas to Catholic Exchange:

February 4th, 2011 by Leticia Velasquez

The priest upon whose experience the book and movie The Rite are based, Father Gary Thomas  gives an extended interview to Leticia Velasquez, about the writing and purpose of the book, the realism of the movie, and his experiences with the Rite of Exorcism:
Velasquez: I’d like to ask my first few questions about the book. What did you first believe about Satan? How long had you been a priest and what was your belief?

Fr. Gary: I was a priest for 27 years; I never doubted the existence of Satan. However, I don’t think I’d ever seen Satan until I became an exorcist. Like they say in the Creed. “All that is seen and unseen”. I had no reason to doubt Satan.
Velasquez: No doubt in your years as a priest you’ve seen his work, you just didn’t meet him. After you took the course in exorcism at the Regina Apostolorum, you had more of a change of experience than a change of belief then?
Fr. Gary: Oh, I’d say so, absolutely, sure, because my belief in Satan and the existence of Satan, I just assumed there was a Satan, because the Church teaches about Satan and I thought it was true. Taking the course was very informative, but it wasn’t to much taking the course as being able to apprentice under an exorcist in Rome for three months, that was far more profound.
Velasquez: So that left you convinced that this was an important ministry within the Church?
Fr. Gary: Absolutely. It’s a healing ministry, I think that should be underscored; it’s really a healing ministry. When you think of it that way then there isn’t so much of a provocation that somehow one has to think of it and A. be afraid, that B. think it is all smoke and mirrors. It’s a healing ministry.
Velasquez: And that Roman Capuchin exorcist is portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the film as Fr Lucas?
Fr. Gary: Yes. My character is played by Colin O’Donohue.
Velasquez: And he’s a seminarian rather than an experienced priest?
Fr. Gary: That’s correct. The filmmaker did take a bit of license with that.
Velasquez: Did he play an Irish priest? He’s Irish, right?
Fr. Gary: He is, but in the movie, you will not hear his brogue. He’s playing the role of a deacon, he’s been ordained already. He’s had a faith crisis, and he’s been having a faith crisis during every summer of his seminary formation, he realizes this after he is ordained a deacon. I think he just realizes that he’s made a mistake.
Velasquez: Do you think that the differences in the portrayal of the story affect the message?
Fr. Gary: No, I don’t think so. I mean I watched the movie with Anthony Hopkins two weeks ago, I thought it was very riveting. It was very emotional for me, yes, they took some license, but the core message is in that movie, and I think this is a movie about faith.
Velasquez: It’s good to hear that because the book was very moving.
Fr. Gary: The book is all true. There’s nothing in that book that’s not true.
Velasquez: So you think the movie is realistic?  Unfortunately, the trailers are a bit sensationalistic.
Fr. Gary: I know, the trailers don’t do the movie justice. I’ve had lots of my parishioners say, “Oh my Gosh, they look so scary”, but I tell them it’s not as scary as it looks.
Velasquez: Perhaps they chose the scary parts to attract an audience which might not be initially interested in the deeper message. I hope they do come and it works to get them in to see the film. What is the takeaway message of the film?
Fr. Gary: I think the takeaway message is that its very important to have a faith life. And if you have that faith life, it will only lead to good. That evil does exist in the world and its bigger than just the force of a power. Its an intelligence. And in the same breath, Christ has come to be with us and get us through this life to the next.
Velasquez: Matt Baglio gave me the impression that you two were very devoted to spreading this message in the American Church.
Fr. Gary: Oh, yes.
Velasquez: You sent copies to all the bishops?
Fr. Gary: When Doubleday published the book, the religion editor called me and said, “Do you have any suggestions for us?” I said, “Yes, send this book to every bishop in the United States, and every rector of every major seminary”.
Velasquez: What kind of reaction did you get from the bishops and rectors?
Fr. Gary: I got some very nice thank you notes and some letters acknowledging that they got the book, I know the religion editor got probably more than I did, but I got about a dozen. They were all very positive. Now I will tell you in the same breath, that there are bishops who don’t believe. I’ve had rector generals tell me they don’t believe.
Velasquez: What percentage of dioceses have exorcists?
Fr. Gary: There are 185 dioceses in the country I know there are at least 25 public exorcists, I know there’s a few more. I’d say there’s probably under 50. So probably maybe a quarter of US dioceses have one.
Velasquez: Yet, isn’t that something the Church recommends for every diocese?
Fr. Gary: The Church mandates it in the Code of Canon Law.
Velasquez: So we’re actually in violation of the Code. There was a meeting about exorcism before the USCCB general meeting in November. Do you think that sending the bishops a copy of The Rite had anything to do with it?
Fr. Gary: I wouldn’t say in a profound way, but I would say Bishop Paprocki who is the head of the Canonical Affairs Committee of the USCCB had been to one of our conferences. We have a conference every year back in Chicago and it’s for exorcists and priests involved in the healing ministry and some lay people come too. He went to one of them. I don’t know if he got a copy of the book, although he should have, it came out in 2009 and he was already an ordinary. But he said he doesn’t remember receiving it. But he has since read it. I can’t say it didn’t have anything to do with it. I think the very fact that I wrote a cover letter to 185 bishops may have had an effect.  I hope it did.  But I do think that calling a conference and calling the bishops together should have been a wake up call for a lot of them. There were 65 bishops who signed up for that conference and 55 priests. I thought it was a very well done presentation myself.
Velasquez: Do you have any stories to tell of exorcisms?
Fr. Gary: There was a situation in Rome once with a young woman who walked in speaking Italian to me, my exorcist trainer walked in and blessed her with holy water and she literally began screaming and picked up the chair, and was going to throw it at him. Now, they’re not all like that.
There’s the man I pray over and have been exorcising for two years, there’s huge manifestations, he’s improved dramatically, but, nonetheless, he opened himself up for a bunch of reasons. I can’t detail them…  it would take too long.
Velasquez: In general, what do you recommend people avoid if they don’t want to become involved with demonic activity?
Fr. Gary: I think they should just stay away from everything that is pagan in the sense of ritual, so I recommend that people should stay away from dabbling in the occult; from dabbling in things that are idolatrous; from getting involved in things that are simply about self, and I don’t mean by that going to a club and doing physical exercise. Where people are into Wicca, earth worship of other kinds, witchcraft and spells, crystals, using metaphysical means to try and find answers to questions.
Velasquez: So stay away from New Age practices?
Fr. Gary: Yes, those are all the New Age practices.
Velasquez: Is there any evidence that they are sending any more priests in for exorcism training?
Fr. Gary: Well, we don’t have any training programs. I hope that is something which comes from the meeting in Baltimore, we have no training programs.  I was lucky to get the training I got in Rome, but as I said to the bishops, you can’t expect the exorcists in Rome to train all our exorcists. I have already oriented two guys in the last year; They’ve spent a few days with me. But it requires much more than that.
Velasquez: Do you think there’s a greater need now in the Church than in previous times?
Fr. Gary: I do, because there’s more Catholics involved in more paganism and idolatry.
Velasquez: Father Gabriel Amorth agrees with you, according to his books. Why do you think that there’s not enough of this ministry?
Fr. Gary: I think for a long time we just relied so much on the social sciences, Psychiatry and Psychology as sort of a new religion to figure out the mysteries of human behavior. I think we felt we could just depend on science, and I certainly am a proponent of using Psychiatry and Psychology, but in the same breath, I think that there’s a limit to science and there’s the realm of the spiritual we know far less about. And because of our scientific mind and orientation as a Western society, I think we put these other kinds of things we can’t figure out on the shelf.
Velasquez: So its our prejudice against a spiritual explanation for things?
Fr. Gary: I think so.
Velasquez: Thank you Father Gary.

Ends/.................

We are, of course, obliged to have belief in Satan; we renounce him at Baptism and at Easter and, if we are wise, every night before we go to sleep.
The Cure of Ars was driven to distraction by the devil almost every night of his priesthood and, it is said that priests who carry out exorcisms have much to suffer (a recent and sad case in point has been well publicised).
We must ask the questions:
"Why don't the Bishops appoint exorcists? - Why don't they follow the directive of the Holy Father? Why don't they comply with Canon Law?

Lack of belief may be part of it but is there also a more ominous reason? The smoke of Satan and all that..........

The exorcist squads.....where are they?

A 1940s child's view of devils - courtesy of Fr Gerard Scriven, White Father
In 2007 the Holy Father issued a directive to all Bishops requesting that they take urgent steps to create or strengthen their teams of exorcists. What has happened? The truth is, I don't know, I can't get a clear answer from any Bishop's press office that I contact. I suspect that not very much has happened.
Yet, Pope Benedict issued his orders in full appreciation that the forces of Satan are on the march (apologies if that sounds like Lord of the Rings speak but Tolkien, I am sure was cognisant of the way the world was going when he wrote his trilogy).
Satan is real, demonic influences surround us, abortion, terrorism, euthanasia, genocide, child abuse, family structure in freefall, secularism and the host of other corrosive elements that we now face on a daily basis.

The Exorcist - not too far from the truth
I recall having a conversation with the Westminster Diocesan exorcist, Fr B, many years ago. He told me that he had been commissioned to exorcise a house and had duly arrived with the key and his required sacramentals including a holy water stoup and sprinkler (someone will tell me the latin name for such an item, I am sure). He had not reached very far into the house before he became aware of a most oppressive and overpowering presence, the air chilled imediately to a sub zero temperature and he was, naturally petrified. "What did you do then, Father" I asked.
"Dropped everything and fled" he responded. "It was beyond me to remain there any longer". We tend not to think too deeply about such subjects which is all well and good, but we should not, in any way, underestimate the grip that is on the world and pray regularly and frequently to St Michael and Our Lady. Only two years ago Cardinal Tettamanzi issued a ten point caveat regarding the devil, here it is:

10 points regarding the devil

  1. Do not forget that the devil exists
  2. Do not forget that the Devil is a tempter
  3. Do not forget that the devil is very intelligent and very astute
  4. Be vigilant concerning your eyes and heart – be strong in spirit and virtue
  5. Firmly believe in the victory of Christ over the tempter
  6. Remember that Christ makes you a participant in His victory
  7. Listen carefully to the word of God
  8. Be humble and love mortification
  9. Pray without flagging
  10. Love the Lord your God and offer worship to Him only

Cardinal Tettamanzi’s Decalogue against Temptation
