The atheist on the plane

I have to thank one of my nieces (JJWI) for this piece...I rather like it.

An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned
to her and said, "Do you want to talk?

Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total
stranger, "What would you want to talk about?"

"Oh, I don't know," said the atheist. "How about why there is no God,
or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?" as he smiled smugly.

"Okay," she said. "Those could be interesting topics but let me ask
you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same
stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns
out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?"

The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence,
thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea." To which
the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss
God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don't know s**t?"

And then she went back to reading her book.

  5. Yes, a funny story when you hear it for the first time. However, the atheist obviously was not brought up in the Thomistic tradition (well he wouldn’t have been…). The informed atheist who knew his ‘stuff’ would have replied:

Objection 1. Deer don’t deposit pellets – sheep do – which are known as sheep doo-doo.

Living in the rural US Midwest we have lots of deer around. Their ‘deposit’ is like that of a small dog. It always amazes my daughter that our 80 lb. Labrador makes much larger deposits than a 200 lb. deer. Of course, the dog doesn’t have to scavenge for food and always knows where his next meal is coming from… The deer? Not so much.

Obj. 2. Cows don’t deposit flat patties (that would be physically impossible). Their deposit is in the form of thick soup (think: Minestrone…), which forms patties only when dry. In the US these are referred to as ‘cow pies’. They can also be found on rural restaurant menus (an imitation, not the original, of course…). A little rural humor perhaps (very little…).

But I say… If the atheist had been brought up in the Thomistic tradition - or in the rural countryside - he would not be an atheist. There may be some Dominican heretics, but hardly any Dominican atheists. And farmers are more aware of the Divine than most city dwellers.

  6. Thank you all. GOR, you have a most intimate knowledge of the defecation habits of mammals. I will never eat a cow pie again.

  7. You are most charitable, Richard.

My wife is less diplomatic. She just says I'm "full of it"

    ....:)
